[It's been one week since your arrival to this godforsaken place, and little seems to have changed since then. The doors and windows remain locked, your reluctant host mingles between guests, and nobody has killed each other...yet. It's only a matter of time before someone gives out, though.

What little solace, if any, is that you wake up with several coins on the nightstand next to your bed. Perhaps you should try putting them in that mask in the salon? You might receive some interesting gifts....]

Well, if you're sure... [Foxy gravitates first towards the white chess pieces, assuming Cassandra hasn't picked a side herself yet.]

[She's happy to shift the pieces around for Foxy.]

It's simple. See, you move the pieces like this... [Which she demonstrates.] And the goal is to 'check' the queen with one of your pieces.

It still sounds really complicated, but at least that last goal is easy! [She frowns, poking at them before picking up a knight.] So only the ponies can jump? And how do you know you've successfully 'checked'?

Actually, the knight can move two squares vertically and one square horizontally, or two squares horizontally and one square vertically, so it's pretty unique...

[Hm]

Uh, they can all just move over the board. Don't worry, you'll get it.

Um...okay, if you're sure about that. So, do you go first, or do I?

I'll make it easy on both of us and go first.

[Which she does! Moving a pawn forward by one space.]

[Foxy nods. Her first few moves are simply mirrors of Cassandra's, but after a bit she starts trying her own, tentative moves instead. She's not that strategic at it yet, but she's actually trying, a determined expression creeping onto her face.]

[Perhaps a bit uncharacteristic of Cassandra, but she goes gently on Foxy, using gentler strategies and letting her try things out for herself. She's particularly pleased to see some moves of her own.]

You're getting it. That wasn't bad.

[She even got one of Cass's pawns.]

Really? You think I'm good at this? [She's actually wriggling a bit in her seat, tail twitching happily.]
