ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE...

The first thing you notice upon gaining consciousness is the smell. The air smells musty and woody, like the back corner of some forgotten tourist trap. As you stir yourself awake, you find yourself in a wicker bed with a soft sheet draped over you. The room’s walls are wood-paneled, and a nearby desk displays a digital clock reading “9 AM”. A singular potted plant provides the barest amount of decoration--though, the exact plant species differs between rooms. A note written in flowing cursive has been taped to your door.

MEETING IN THE LOBBY AT NOON

As you make your way out of your room, you’ll find yourself on a balcony overlooking a octagonal lobby below. Various artifacts and trophies decorate the club from top to bottom, cluttering the walls and any available surface. From here, you can clearly see that the marble floor of the lobby is decorated to look like a compass. Descending the stairs will reveal that, in addition to the artifacts mounted on the walls, several plaques have been put up detailing the lives of those trapped here--including you.

If you peer out the windows, you’ll see a tropical island sprawled out before you, overgrown with palm trees and shrubs. If you peer far enough above the treeline, you might even be able to see the ocean. No matter how hard you try, the front door is sealed shut and the windows seem impossible to break.

You've got until noon 'til the meeting happens. For now...enjoy the club, if you can.

Oh, like that song that's been playing for the past half hour. [p sure it's engraved in her brain now.] Hopefully we won't have to get along for very long; once I figure out what magic is keeping us here, I can break it.

[The sudden enthusiasm seems genuine, as much as anything about Bill is genuine. Which isn't a high bar.]

That is a FANTASTIC coincidence, I happen to know a few things about the arcane, and I recently had a small falling out with my last protege. Something about pursuing family over a career, I don't know. Ever thought about a partnership?

[slight shrug] Looks like you're family-blocked again! I really doubt there's anything you can teach me about magic that my grandma can't. She's a Cromwell.

Oh man, a Cromwell, huh? That is pretty tough to beat.

[he has never heard of these people before, and that's saying something for him]

But how's her tech, huh? You know what they say, sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from technology, integration's how you can REALLY bend reality.

She's actually a pretty accomplished inventor, considering. [y'know, being old.]

... Why? What tech do you have?

Interdimensional portals, mostly.

Oh. [VISIBLY LESS INTERESTED] That's it?

Plenty more, but beyond that it gets into super abstract concepts and rewriting reality, that kind of thing tends to break fleshy-type brains.

I did it yesterday and I was fine. [she taps her temple, as if to show her brain is not broke.]

[Okay. Recalibrating his approach here, because this is too potentially valuable to pass up.]

[Seriously, what kind of teenager is this secure self-assured? It's unnatural is what it is.]

Well! Guess I should've expected as much, from the heir to the Cromwells. You must be pretty good to have a handle on that kind of power at your age, kiddo.

[visibly preens] Well, I did have some help. Me and Sophie broke through, but it took the whole family to keep it there.

Hey, the best leaders always know how to delegate! Takes a real visionary to herd cats like that.

[she does like the sound of that...]

... Y'know, idle curiosity. What exactly are you trying to trick me into doing for you?

Who's tricking anyone? Is it so unreasonable that someone might want to combine talents?
